The Valley of the Kings, 715x240

Valley of the Kings, West Bank, Luxor

The Valley of the Kings on Luxor's west bank was the resting place for dozens of ancient Egypt's rulers, including the famous boy-king, Tutankhamun. There are almost 100 separate tombs, from plain crypts and bare-walled rooms to vast and ornately decorated chambers covered with hieroglyphs that intricately recount the history of Egypt's ancient kingdoms. Among the pharaohs buried in the Valley of the Kings are Seti I, architect of the temple at Abydos, and several members of the Rameses and Amenhoteps dynasties, and famously, King Tutankhamun, whose tomb was only rediscovered by Howard Carter in the 1920s.
