Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel consists of two massive rock temples, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the western bank of Lake Nasser about 230 km southwest of Aswan. The temples were carved from the rock face of a mountain 3,300 years ago, as a monument to Ramesses II and his queen, Nefertari, and commemorating his victory in battle. The temples stood in peace, towering ofer the Nile until 1968. The impending completion of the Aswan High Dam and flooding of Lake Nasser would have submerged the temples completely. Instead, they were cut up, relocated and reassembled above the new shore line in a specially constructed hillside. In their new location, they have been saved for future generations, and are now one of Egypt's most visited sites.
