The Unfinished Obelisk, AswanThe Unfinished Obelisk is situated in an ancient quarry in Aswan. Had it been finished, it would have been more than 40 metres long, and weighed 1,200 tons, making it the largest stone obelisk erected in ancient Egypt: almost one third longer than the nearest completed obelisk. Unfortunately, while quarrying work was underway a large crack developed which ruined the obelisk and it was abandoned. It's purpose is not known for sure, but archaeologists believe it may have been intended to partner the "Lateran Obelisk", originally sited in Karnak, but now found at Rome's Lateran Palace.
