Red Sea Resort Airport Guide (Hurghada, Luxor, Sharm el Sheikh)

Hurghada Airport

Airport Code:  HRG

Hurghada Airport is located inland, 5 miles/8 km southwest of Hurghada. The airport is a twenty minute drive from the city centre and is found next to the main ring road.

There is one terminal with several restaurants, snack bars and shops including currency exchange and duty-free. Facilities for disabled travellers are basic, with wheelchairs available from the airline counters - the use of which can be arranged with airlines prior to departure.

Car parking is just outside the terminal, and car hire is available. Public transport is by road, with buses to Hurghada that wait outside the airport and leave once full (journey time - 20 minutes). Regular taxis also operate from the airport, along with tourist taxis – though they charge double the fare. There are no hotels at the airport, but a number are located around 6 miles/10 km in Hurghada itself, 20 miles/35km south in Makadi Bay, or 14 miles/20km north in el Gouna

Sharm el Sheikh Airport

Airport Code:  SSH

News update: The airport is planning to open a new runway and third terminal during 2012, which will double the airport's capacity from 7.5 to 15 million passengers per year.

Sharm el Sheikh Airport is 11 miles / 18 km northeast of the town, just on the main road that follows the coast directly into Sharm el Sheikh – this drive takes around twenty minutes.

There are two terminal buildings with all the usually facilities you’d expect at a busy holiday airport: banking and currency exchange, several restaurants and snack bars, and a range of retail outlets including souvenir shops, jewellery, and duty-free shopping. Disabled travellers can use wheelchairs provided by airlines by prior arrangement.

Secure short-term and long-term car parking is available outside both terminals, and car hire is available within the airport. Public transport is by bus with minibuses providing a transfer service to Sharm el Sheikh – a 30 minute journey. Private taxis are available too, along with the more expensive tourist taxis. Most visitors who arrive at the airport are taken to their hotels by tour operator transfer coaches.

Luxor Airport

Airport Code: LXR

Luxor airport is 4 miles / 6 km east of the historic city. The airport was upgraded in 2005 to accommodate more passengers, and is currently Egypt’s fourth-biggest airport.
Airport facilities include currency exchange, restaurants, post office and shopping, including duty-free. Wheelchairs are available for disabled passengers – airlines can provide them if notified in advance.

To travel to Luxor from the airport, there is a regular bus service to the city centre which takes around 15 minutes. This can be busy and crowded at times, so you may prefer a private taxi or limousine if you wish to travel in style! Car hire is available within the airport.
