Hatshepsut's Temple, Deir el Bahari, LuxorQueen Hatshepsut ruled Egypt for 22 years around 3,500 years ago, making her one of the longest ruling female pharaohs. Following in the tradition of the pharaohs before her, the queen ensured that here mortuary temple would be a masterpiece. It is located beneath the cliffs at Deir el Bahari on the west bank of the Nile near the Valley of the Kings. The spectacular colonnaded structure is built directly into the cliff face, and has many terraces that were once planted with lush gardens. The temple set a trend for the pharaohs who followed, and was in part responsible for the growth of the Valley of the Kings as their preferred burial location.
