Felucca on Nile, 715x240

Felucca fishing boats

A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat used on inshore waters around the Red Sea, Mediterranean coast, and in particular, on the River Nile in Egypt and Sudan. The boats have one or two sails, lateen-rigged, and a crew of two or three. Traditionally used for fishing and cargo, feluccas can accommodate a number of passengers, and are a popular way to experience the Nile at a slower, quieter pace.

Many Red Sea Holidays cruise and tour itineraries include the opportunity to enjoy a felucca trip. This is subject to weather conditions: in certain circumstances, there can be sudden squalls on the Nile, making the journey unpleasantly rough for such a small craft.
