Aswan High Dam, Aswan, Egypt

The giant High Dam at Aswan remains one of the world's most significant civil engineering projects, and one of the biggest successes of the New Era that followed Egypt's revolution in the 1950s. The dam took 5 years to plan, 10 years to build, and a further 6 years to fill. Since its completion it has provided Egypt with water, electricity, and protects the fertile river banks against both drought and destructive seasonal flooding. Many precious archaeological sites would have been destroyed by the newly created Lake Nasser, and major projects were undertaken to catalogue, protect, and in some cases, relocate these entirely. The most famous are the relocation of the Temples of Philae, and the mighty Abu Simbel.>
